coaching

In an introductory session or sessions, you and I would identify what you want to accomplish with coaching support. This dictates, to some extent, how often you and I might meet and how long the coaching may last.

For example, if you want to work toward being promoted or having a new job within six months, then we might schedule weekly or every other week sessions to focus on actions that will assure your promotion or acquiring that new position. The coaching time frame would be six to nine months since clients usually want some ongoing support to move into the new position smoothly and strongly.

Or let’s say that you want to change a bad habit like taking on too many things at once and getting overwhelmed, as one of your first coaching goals. We would likely schedule weekly sessions to explore this habit, practice new behaviors to keep you in balance, and replace the old behavior and related beliefs with more appropriate, empowering beliefs and actions. Sometimes frequent mini sessions might be the right support system for building a new habit. The coaching time frame would be somewhere between six months and a year to develop a sustainable new set of behaviors.

I hope you can see from these examples that coaching offers the flexibility to support you in the most optimal way that you and I can identify.

Generally, coaching is done in 15, 30, or 45 minute sessions on a regular basis (weekly, bi-weekly, etc.).  Coaching with me gets you a bit more:  you’ll have our regular sessions where you and I work together, and you’ll also get brief accountability sessions with my virtual assistant who will provide structured support for identified actions, as needed.

We coaches have learned that most goals take at least three months or more to realize, and for true growth and long-term change, it’s usually a six to twelve month commitment.  I want to see my clients reach their goals and create the lives they want as quickly as possible and feel confident that they can sustain that new life, so I request that you make a minimum 6-month commitment to begin yet have a year-long mindset and approach.

Coaching is not a magic pill or a quick fix.  If you really want something different in your life and are willing to do what it takes and commit the time, then I’m excited to work with you and confident that we can realize great things together.

While coaching in person may be ideal, that limits your choice of coaches and times available. So, most of my coaching is done over the telephone (or video Skype, if you prefer) at a time that works for both of us.  We can schedule regular weekly sessions at the same day/time, or we can be flexible from week to week, based on what works for both parties.

You decide what you want to accomplish and get from each session, so I ask that you always come to your coaching session with a prepared list to work on.  If possible, send that list to me beforehand. We use that to focus and guide our sessions. (Click here to see a blank Prep Form you can use.)

The coaching sessions will feel very conversational as we explore what you want to work on. Each session will generally follow these steps:

  1. Check in on your progress
  2. Establish the focus for our session today
  3. Explore options and possibilities
  4. Create an action plan and address any obstacles
  5. Develop accountability structures and confirm commitment
  6. Recap, identify new perspectives, and connect to long-term goals/vision

This sounds more rigid and formal than it will feel. My job is to help you clarify what you want (learn what’s important to you and what your strengths, values, and passions are), stay on target and in action to quickly reach your goals, and often help you see what else is possible as you reach those first goals and come to appreciate yourself more.  We’ll actually have a lot of fun together while we focus on you and your goals. My clients say they really look forward to our coaching sessions and appreciate the opportunity to focus on themselves and their lives.
